About

The purpose of this project is two-fold:

First, recommending movies to anyone who has similar taste.

Secondly, getting recommendations from anyone with similar tastes.

The easiest way to do this is to friend me on Letterboxd.

A little about how I rate movies:

★★★★★ 5 stars = All-time favorite. If a friend who hadn't seen it wanted to watch it, I would — even if I had seen it recently.

★★★★☆ 4.5 stars = Likely the best of that year. I'd watch it again with a friend if I haven't seen it in the past few years.

★★★★ 4 stars = Likely top ten of that year. I'd rewatch it every decade or so.

★★★☆ 3.5 stars = Worth recommending, but not necessarily worth watching again. Although I have rewatched many after years, especially if I think a friend would enjoy it.

★★★ 3 stars = Worth watching, but not worth talking about.

★★☆ 2.5 stars = Has some good scenes, but ultimately forgettable.

When I first started using Letterboxd, I went back and rated every movie I'd seen. For some of them, I knew I had seen them but couldn't remember anything about them — those got a 2.5. If it had been worse than that, I'd probably remember how bad it was.

The Lower End of the Scale

0.5 – 2 stars = Varying levels of bad.

I don't have many of these, because if a movie is that bad, I'll usually turn it off after 20 minutes and not rate it at all.

★★ 2 stars = Bad, but I didn't absolutely hate it.

★☆ 1.5 stars = I'm mad I wasted my time.

★ 1 star = I'm really mad I wasted my time.

☆ 0.5 stars = I'm not even sure how I finished this. Maybe I saw it at a film festival?
